PERIODONTAL disease
Periodontal disease is one of the most common human diseases. It’s an infectious condition that can lead to the destruction of the gum tissue and bone. Bacteria found in plaque produces toxins or poisons that irritate the gums, which may cause them to turn red, swell and bleed easily.
If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth, causing pockets (spaces) to form. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorate. When left untreated the bacteria that cause gum disease may travel through the blood stream increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, and pregnancy complications. Many systemic illness as well as medication can also contribute to your risk of periodontal disease.
At Kulik Dental, we focus on prevention and treatment and maintenance of periodontal disease. Your dental and overall health is of up most importance. More Information.
Preventing Gum Disease
The best way to prevent gum disease is effective daily brushing and flossing as well as regular professional examinations and cleanings. Unfortunately, even with the most diligent home dental care, people still can develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress.
Periodontal Treatments
There are numerous disease entities requiring different treatment approaches. Treatment guidelines suggest that periodontal health should be achieved in the least invasive and most cost-effective manner available. At Kulik Dental this is often accomplished through non-surgical periodontal treatment, including scaling and root planning (a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins) This may be followed by adjunctive therapy such as laser disinfection, local delivery antimicrobials, and thorough oral hygiene instruction, as needed on a case-by-case basis.
Many patients do not require any further active treatment, including surgical therapy after scaling and root planning, however, the majority of patients will require ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health. Non-surgical therapy does have its limitations, however, and when it does not achieve periodontal health, surgery may be indicated to restore periodontal anatomy damaged by periodontal diseases and to assist with oral hygiene practices. Daily effective plaque removal and regular maintenance appointments are very important factors in the success of all surgical and non surgical periodontal treatment.
Periodontal Maintenance
While professional examination and cleaning of your teeth and gums is part of the care you always receive at Kulik dental, individually tailored supportive periodontal therapy appointments (SPT’s) may be required more frequently after a diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease.
There is no “cure” for periodontal disease, it can only be controlled and because plaque forms on our teeth daily and aggravates our gums by releasing toxins, active periodontal disease can reoccur in as little as 60-90 days following a professional cleaning.
Dr. Kulik and your dental hygienist will determine a frequency interval based on the type of periodontal disease you have, treatment response, health history, and daily plaque control.
The care you receive through periodontal maintenance therapy can offset the necessity of more extensive periodontal care, the need for implants due to the loss of teeth as well as lower your risks and costs of additional health concerns.
At Kulik Dental, we work diligently with you to maintain a strong beautiful smile and good overall health for a lifetime.
